He works with clients from the first consultation through to completion — the brief, the survey, the drawings, the planting plan, the stone and timber, and the build itself. There is no design department to be handed over by, and no crew turning up to interpret someone else's drawing. The work splits roughly into two halves. One is design and construction: terraces in Indian sandstone, York stone, limestone, slate or granite; hardwood, softwood and composite decking; planting schemes chosen for colour, form, texture and scent; ponds, streams and rills; and bespoke timber garden buildings. The other is maintenance — regular visits shaped around each garden and each budget, from mowing, edging and hedge work to topiary, pruning and seasonal borders, plus one-off clearances for owners and letting agents.
Those two halves feed each other. Because Stephen keeps maintaining gardens after he has built them, he sees for himself which planting plans thrive and which paving details silt up — and a client who has had their garden looked after since 2005 is a reference no advertising can buy. Stephen also describes the business as a member of the British Association of Landscape Industries since 2006; that is his own description of it, so take it as such rather than as a certificate on this page.

Survey and drawings
The garden is measured and surveyed, then designed — layout, levels, hard landscaping and a planting plan you can actually read. Design fees run from £350 to £1,000 depending on the size of the garden and the time involved, and are reduced by 25% if the same hands go on to build it.

Construction, by the man who drew it
Paving, decking, walls, steps, water features and timber buildings are built to the drawing, in the order that makes sense on the ground. Because the designer is the builder, a detail that does not work in reality gets solved on site instead of being argued over by email.

Planting, then keeping it
Planting goes in for colour, form, texture and scent, with structure and height planned in from the start. After handover most clients keep Stephen on for regular maintenance — mowing, pruning, hedges, topiary and seasonal work — so year three looks better than year one, not worse.
